About Me

Hello, my name is Jeff Twyman and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 20 years of experience, specializing in individual, couples and family therapy and I maintain a private practice in Louisville, Kentucky. Thank you for taking the time to explore this site, I hope it will be helpful to you as you make a crucial decision about pursuing counseling. Here's a little bit about my work, and my work history, which I hope will be useful in that process.

I am an interactive therapist utilizing various modalities of therapy including Solution-Focused, Cognitive-Behavioral and Emotion-Focused, to name a few. My therapeutic approach is to provide support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal life challenges. I integrate complementary methodologies and techniques to offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each client. With compassion and understanding, I work with each individual to help them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.

I have extensive experience working with couples in marital distress for any number of reasons ranging from life cycle issues such as empty nest syndrome or the trials of being in the sandwich generation, grief and loss, as well as helping couples and individual spouses regroup after infidelity, substance use issues and mental illness.

I also have experience working with children and adolescents with ADD, ADHD and ODD; facilitating the development of and increase in self-awareness and other-awareness, building empathy skills, utilizing more adaptive decision-making skills while validating their emotions. Part of this work involves helping them make connections between their feelings, the decisions they make and their relationships.

In working with the parents of these children, I have helped to construct more effective boundaries, to implement logical consequences and to foster accountability. I also help parents deal with the many stressors on their personal lives and marriages as they deal with a developmentally delayed child or one with a behavioral or emotional problem.

Education: BA from Furman University in Greenville, SC, 1986; a Masters of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, 1992; a Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky, 1999. I feel it is important to mention that while I highly value the theological component of my education, I have no religious agenda when working with clients. I am very comfortable looking at things from a pastoral perspective and utilizing the spiritual when working with clients, but I take my lead from my clients and do not impose my religious or spiritual views upon the work we do together.

License & Certifications: Licensed by the State of Kentucky in 2002; Certified Families in Transition Facilitator: a Divorce Education Program; Certified Prepare/Enrich Facilitator: a Couples Enrichment Inventory

Professional Memberships: Member of the Kentucky Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (KAMFT.org); Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT.org); member of the Kentucky Collaborative Family Network (KCFN), a group dedicated to making divorce a simpler, peaceful and more manageable process.
